Calvary Baptist Church of Englewood began as a Baptist mission in the Englewood area in 1969. Pastor Wallis C. Metts of Russell Park Baptist Church of Ft. Myers and his good friend Pastor Ray Thompson felt led to start a church in Englewood.
They went door to door inviting area residents to a week long revival of the First Independent Baptist Mission. On the 1st Sunday, 16 people showed up.
Soon after, Pastor Thompson became the 1st Pastor of what was then called First Independent Baptist Church of Englewood. In 1970, the 17 acres that Calvary Baptist Church currently sits on was purchased.
Then in 1974, Pastor John Brock changed the name to Calvary Baptist Church.
In 1981, Wallis Metts returned as the 6th pastor and remained for 22 years building a legacy of preaching, teaching, and soul winning.
During our 46+ year history, many have come to know Christ, been baptized, and sent out to spread the Gospel. We now look forward to a bright future with many others being brought into the family of God and giving faithful service to our Lord.
