Our History

More than five decades of gospel ministry in Englewood

Calvary Baptist Church traces its roots to revival meetings held in Englewood in 1969. From sixteen people in a borrowed meeting place, God established a local church that continues serving this community today.

Calvary Baptist Church through the years
From 1969 to today

On Sunday, February 2, 1969, Pastors Ray Thompson and Wally Metts held revival meetings at the Lemon Bay Women’s Club. Sixteen people attended that first meeting, and from that humble beginning, First Independent Baptist Church was born. In 1970, the church moved to its present location at 75 Pine Street, where the first building was dedicated as the Thompson Building. Its first service was held on February 7, 1971. Under the leadership of Ernest Humphries, the church became Community Baptist Church, and in 1974, under Pastor Roy Perry, the church became Calvary Baptist Church. In November 1981, God called Wally Metts back to Englewood. During the years that followed, God continued to bless and grow the ministry. The current auditorium was completed in 1987, and a playground was added in 2001. Through each generation and every season of ministry, God has faithfully sustained Calvary Baptist Church and enabled it to continue its mission of reaching people with the Gospel and helping them grow in Christ.

Today
